Il Progetto Hamlet. Ricostruire coesione sociale e

        partecipazione attraverso una piattaforma digitale

The Hamlet Project. Rebuilding social cohesion and participation through a digital platform

Thanks to the commitment of the researcher in Sociology of cultural processes Damiano Razzoli, the
Department of Communication and Economics of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia has launched
a research-action project to bring Hamlet within urban communities. Hamlet is a civic and public digital plat-
form, equipped with an open source based on spatial logic, which proposes an approach to the digital space
as a common good. The Municipality of Reggio Emilia, together with the manager of the Open Laboratory
of the Cloisters of San Pietro, decided to experiment with the platform within the activities of the project
“Quartiere Bene Comune”. Together with the team of Open Box, a company from Modena that designed the
initial prototype of Hamlet, Razzoli has carried out a complex work of listening and research-action through
interviews and focus groups to verify people’s perception of the impact of digital in daily life and local com-
munities. Those who access Hamlet can enter digital environments that recall the physical spaces of the
neighbourhood and activate forms of collaboration between people living in the same context of proximity,
consolidate networks of relationships, respond to the needs of the inhabitants and activate services, en-
couraging the development of welcoming and inclusive communities. The second phase of the research will
focus on the participatory design of digital spaces, with activation of roles, functions and services tailored to
the needs and characteristics of the different areas.
