1175-2025: distant roots and new outcomes

Unimore has its roots in 1175, when a school of law was established in Modena by Pillio da Medicina. From
the Middle Ages, through the centuries of Este rule, to the academic renaissance of the late 17th century,
the University has maintained a steady role in culture and education. Today, this legacy is a solid foundation
on which to continue building. Starting out as a centre of legal excellence, over time it has developed into a
place of multidisciplinary growth, and today covers a wide range of disciplines: Health, Life, Science, Tech-
nology, Society and Culture. The strength of a University that was founded 850 years ago lies in its ability to
renew itself. The University can never be a static institution, closed in the past. Over the years, it has forged
partnerships with many institutes and research centres around the world, fostering the mobility of students
and lecturers and creating knowledge networks that transcend national borders. This approach has allowed
Unimore to become part of the world panorama of scientific and technological research. Today, at 850 years
old, Unimore presents itself as a dynamic organism, constantly evolving. The 13 departments, schools and
research centres that make up the University are proof of a solid and balanced academic structure. With this
spirit, Unimore prepares to face its next chapter, with the awareness of having an important history and, at
the same time, being a protagonist of a future to be written.
