Our University is preparing to open up its 847th Academic Year, which coincides with the twenty-fifth an-
niversary of the establishment of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, a university with a network of
campuses in which the seat of Reggio Emilia, where three important Departments and numerous Degree
Programmes are active, has joined that of Modena. This is an important moment every year and even more
so this year, as the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, will attend the event on 1 December. The
twenty-fifth anniversary of the establishment of the Reggio Emilia campus are also evidence of the success
of this model of university organisation, which originally had its uncertainties but now is fully realised. In fact,
on this happy occasion the inauguration ceremony will take place precisely in Reggio Emilia, the city that
225 years ago moulded the first white, red and green flag and is now proudly the ‘Città del Tricolore’ (City of
the tricolour). The tricolour is the banner that has accompanied the path of our country in both its brightest
and darkest moments, and the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia feels a strong sense of belonging
to the values our flag recalls. Proud of its public nature, over the years our university has shown itself to be
a protagonist in the significant renewal phase that has affected the main academic realities: a large ‘mass’
institution and, at the same time, a centre of excellence, both in terms of research and in terms of teaching
and services provided to students. The main evaluation rankings see Unimore in the top positions in terms
of quality and employability, and there are many innovative projects under development, which are also
recounted in this special issue dedicated to the initiatives connected with the National Plan for Recovery
and Resilience (NRRP) in which our University as a protagonist. Enhancing the people who work and study
at Unimore and unleashing their full potential is our main purpose for the 847th Academic Year that we are
about to open up and which makes us a community open to knowledge and the development of people and
the community. Always with an eye to the future.
