Erasmus between past and future: from Erasmus 2014-20 to the new Erasmus 2021-27
The action promoted under the Erasmus+ programme in 2014-2020 (with funding of €14.8 billion) has
enabled the mobility of four million people (students, teachers and staff) for study, internships, teaching and
training activities. The Erasmus Programme fosters lifelong learning and mobility, promotes equity and social
cohesion, encourages curiosity, creativity and innovation, problem solving skills, confidence and awareness,
and give university students the opportunity to improve their professional prospects and openness, making
them active participants in creating a responsible and inclusive citizenship. Through the University Language
Centre, Unimore promotes and finances free language and cultural programmes at different levels both for
incoming and outgoing students; with the student association ESN - Erasmus Student Network it organizes
recreational and cultural activities; and with the support of the International Welcome Desk, it offers advice
and assistance to inbound and outbound mobility students and staff. At European and non-European level,
inbound and outbound mobility numbers were very high for the previous 6-year period, and the actions taken
have proved to be a solid ground to develop the internationalization process further. The projects are continuo-
usly growing and the budget for Erasmus 21-27 is estimated at €26.2 billion. Strong focus is placed on social
inclusion, green and digital transition, and promoting young people’s participation in democratic life, following
the ECHE principles - European Charter for Higher Education. Unimore supports the European Student Card
initiative as a key action of the European Education Area, which aims to make mobility accessible to everybody
and to revive a sense of European identity among students. It also meant to contribute positively to the crea-
tion of the European Higher Education Area. The strategic objectives include: increasing the number of double
degree and joint degree agreements with strategic areas considered to be priorities; organising second-cycle
study programmes entirely in English; enhancing the internationalisation of doctoral programmes; recruiting
foreign students and teachers; improving international rankings; signing strategic partnerships; joining the
network of European universities as transnational alliances for the universities of the future; promoting Euro-
pean values and identity; and raising the quality and competitiveness of European higher education.
