Building an inclusive future in research
The Department of Life Sciences organised an event on 14 February, on the occasion of the International
Day of Women and Girls in Science, titled ‘Let’s build an inclusive future in research’. The meeting, aimed at
high school students, aimed to promote gender equality in university education and science. Over 120 high
school students from Modena and its province attended, listening to the testimonies of ten female research-
ers from the Department, who work in the pharmaceutical, biological, biotechnological and agri-food sec-
tors. The initiative is part of a broader effort by the University to break down cultural barriers and promote
women’s access to STEM areas, where they are still underrepresented. The speakers emphasised the
importance of an inclusive and non-discriminatory university education, reiterating that science is accessible
to all, regardless of gender. The event also emphasised how gender balance in STEM research is essential
for meeting the challenges of modernity and for technological and scientific progress.
