Editorial. Unimore’s ongoing commitment to promoting gender equality
For International Women’s Rights Day, we analyse the state of gender equality in the research and develop-
ment sector in Italy in the light of the data published by the European Commission in the report “She Figures
2024”. Despite an improvement in the percentage of female professors in the first rank, Italy remains below
the European average. Unimore recorded an increase from 25% in 2012 to 29.9% in 2023. Italy ranks 18th
in Europe with a score of 73.4 in the She Figures index, which measures gender equality in the research
sector. In 2024, Unimore approved a Gender Budget, which analyses gender equality among both students
and staff, highlighting concrete actions in favour of equality and reclassifying expenses according to their
gender impact. Despite the prevalence of women among students and graduates, the gender gap increases
in senior academic roles. Departmental analysis continues to monitor inequalities, supporting reflection for
the new Gender Equality Plan, in a participatory approach that will involve the entire academic community.
The Gender Balance becomes a key tool to promote structural change towards greater gender equality, in
line with the H2020 *LeTSGEPs* project. Actions in 2023 include departmental awareness-raising initiatives
and a network of Equal Opportunities contact persons. In addition, thematic events and discussions on gen-
der equality are planned, with an Athenaeum initiative to be held by mid-April to share the updated analysis
and initiate new actions.
