Il Dottorato in Neuroscienze: un approccio

interdisciplinare per un alto grado di

         specializzazione

The PhD in Neuroscience: an interdisciplinary approach for a high degree of specialisation

The PhD Programme in Neuroscience, coordinated by Prof. Sandro Rubichi, was set up in Modena almost
twenty years ago, promoted by Prof. Carlo Adolfo Porro, the current Magnificent Rector of Unimore, in
response to the rapid scientific growth of neuroscience studies in the biomedical and clinical fields. It aims
to prepare researchers with a global and interdisciplinary vision of the various aspects of neuroscience and
behavioural science, providing a high degree of specialisation in research in these two fields. The pro-
gramme comprises two curricula: Neuroscience and Behavioural Science. The former has an interdisciplin-
ary focus ranging from molecular and cellular neuroscience, neuro- and psychopharmacology, cognitive and
social neuroscience, psychology, and clinical neuroscience. The second curriculum, with a closer approach
to clinics, focuses on the assessment of risk and protective factors of emotional, cognitive and personality
development in childhood and adolescence. The research activity of the lecturers and research groups of
the PhD Programme in which doctoral students are placed can be traced back to three thematic areas. The
first one has a clinical soul and is related to patient studies in psychiatry, neurology and child neuropsychia-
try. The second one is related to basic neuroscience, ranging from molecular neurobiology to computational
neurobiology and neuropharmacology. The third area of research is cognitive neuroscience, dealing with the
mind-brain relationship for different aspects of cognitive and psychological functioning. The PhD Programme
interacts intensively with the Interdepartmental Centre for Neuroscience and Neurotechnology (CfNN), a
research centre at Unimore consisting of a scientific community of 70 university lecturers, researchers and
technicians. The programme has always placed great emphasis on the possibility for students to imme-
diately become part of the national and international scientific community, and PhD students are strongly
encouraged to take advantage of the possibility of a training period abroad.
