L’influenza della Cina in Europa tra XVI e XVIII secolo:
il PRIN PNRR del DESU
The influence of China in Europe between the 16th and 18th centuries: DESU’s PRIN PNRR
The PRIN 2022 project of the Department of Education and Human Sciences, financed within the frame-
work of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, coordinated by Prof. Francesco Borghesi, is focused on
analysing the influence of China in Europe between the 16th and 18th centuries as an important European
window on Chinese culture and as an agent of change in the intellectual and cultural history of modern
Europe. The project ‘Images of China from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment’ involves four converging
lines of research: - a philological analysis of the writings on China from the Renaissance to the Enlighten-
ment; a philological analysis of the writings on China by the Italian Jesuit Michele Ruggieri (1543-1607); a
historical analysis of the information provided by Jesuit missionaries such as, among others, Matteo Ricci,
Nicolas Trigault, Prospero Intorcetta, Martino Martini, Daniello Bartoli and Joachim Bouvet, and the ways
in which European intellectuals used this information; a survey of the image of China resulting from the
‘Lettres édifiantes et curieuses’, the most influential work produced between 1702 and 1778 by the Jesuits
to inform the population in Europe of their missionary adventures; and a study of European cartographic
images of East Asia and China from the 13th to the 17th century.
