Dalla Fisica al machine learning e ritorno

‘From Physics to Machine Learning and back’

The Nobel Prize in Physics 2024 was awarded to John J. Hopfield and Geoffrey E. Hinton ‘for fundamental
discoveries [...] enabling machine learning with artificial neural networks’. This award celebrates the fun-
damental role that the concepts and models of Physics, formalised by the prize-winners, have played in the
development of technologies that are today central both in everyday life and in scientific research activities.
These new techniques are particularly present in the teaching and scientific activities of the physicists of
Unimore’s Department of Physics, Informatics and Mathematics (FIM). The strategic line “Digital design of
sustainable materials” was recently funded, aimed at integrating machine learning and high performance
scientific computing for applications in materials science. Unimore physicists are engaged in research
projects that make extensive use of these technologies, also as part of cutting-edge national and European
initiatives. Maintaining leadership on these issues means first and foremost training new generations of
physicists in the new approaches. The International Master’s Degree in Physics at Unimore offers specific
courses on the application of machine learning to various fields of physics, from the design and analysis of
new nano-materials to astrophysics, providing students with the tools to greatly speed up the solution of
frontier problems, both in research and in industry.
