Research, training, and intercultural dialogue to build social cohesion: the SICCS project

The project on Intercultural Strategies to Build Social Cohesion (Strategie Interculturali per Costruire Coesione
Sociale - SICCS), coordinated by the Prefecture of Reggio Emilia, was born from the Migration and Integra-
tion Asylum Fund (Fondo Asilo Migrazione e Integrazione - FAMI), and involves Unimore, the Mondinsieme
Intercultural Centre, and the E35 Foundation of Reggio Emilia as partners. Unimore plays a role of important
responsibility, through Professor Loris Vezzali, with research activities aimed at deepening the understanding
of phenomena of social marginality of young people in the area and training activities to provide public opera-
tors with knowledge and skills suitable to address the impact of social change and cultural developments in
society. The research is divided in two parts: 1. the analysis of risk factors and indicators of social discomfort;
and 2. the study and assessment of the effectiveness of initiatives in place on the territory.

The territory of Reggio Emilia boasts several initiatives supported by local institutions and associations that
promote integration and intercultural dialogue, which, however, require an increasing involvement of migrant
communities in the definition of a more incisive strategy intended to promote coexistence, in order to foster
intercultural dialogue as much as possible and prevent risks of social conflict, strengthening existing networks
and ensuring the involvement of all players involved. The initiative tries to involve as many institutional and so-
